Dr. Spelman has a PhD in Biology, his research has focused on molecular techniques to elucidate the interface between human physiology and phytochemistry. He was a postdoctoral research scientist at the National Institutes of Health where investigated cannabinoid signaling, brain cancer and ovarian cancer, a research fellow at the Université de Paris/Muséum national d’histoire naturelle studying cancer and malaria and managed a mass spectrometry lab at University of North Carolina where he researched immunomodulation by the endocannabinoid system.
Education as Key
Dr. Spelman was a co-founder of the first accredited Masters of Science degree in herbal medicine, and has lectured at Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, UNM Med School and held faculty positions at Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, National College of Natural Medicine, Bastyr University, Maryland University of Integrative Health, Southwest School of Botanical Medicine and the Ayurvedic Institute. He was also a cofounder of the first Bachelors in Science program in Herbal Medicine. Dr. Spelman also publishes an audio science journal on natural products for clinicians.
Dr. Spelman has been fortunate to travel the globe. He has performed research in Africa and Central America and advised the Jamaican government on natural products. He graduated from a British college (University of Exeter), worked in pharmacognosy as a Marie Curie Research Fellow at University of Paris and in malaria research at the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle. He lived and worked in Central America volunteering as a healthcare consultant at an underfunded facility for disabled children. He has also lectured in China, Singapore, Malaysia, S. Korea, Jamaica, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Canada. Besides being a research scientist, he has been a medicinal plant wildcrafter, in the eastern and western United States.
As a clinician with 3 decades of clinical experience treating a wide range of health conditions, he is an informed formulator and product development consultant. Dr. Spelman currently has 13 SKUs in the market both cannabinoid and non-cannabinoid based products and has co-formulated products in use by 30 professional sports teams and 3 branches of military special services.
